Tips to Remain Business as Usual During Restaurant Remodeling

Renovating or remodeling your restaurant may be a requirement and a cost-effective investment. This means improving your restaurant’s look, efficiency, functionality, comfort, and safety. Ultimately, it will benefit you, your staff, and your customers.

Typically, a major remodel might mean having to close the restaurant while the construction is ongoing. However, what if you can’t afford to close down, even if it’s only for a few days? Similarly, what if only a portion of the restaurant is being remodeled? Would closing for days be necessary?

Here are tips that can help you maintain good business while having restaurant renovations done.

1. Help customers manage their expectations.

A simple sign by the door or window saying that a portion of the restaurant is under renovation can help set the tone for customers. This way, they can expect to hear noises from the construction or wait longer to be seated as there might be fewer tables available. You can also post a message on your social media pages.

2. Modify your table greeting script.

Ask your waiters and attendants to give customers a heads-up that some construction or remodeling is currently ongoing. Tell them to thank customers in advance for their patience and understanding. Your staff should also be prepared to answer questions as to why the renovations are being done. This is a chance to tell customers that the goal of the renovations is to provide them with better service.

3. Contain the renovation area.

As much as possible, cover and contain the area of renovation. This will make sure that customers will not see the mess of the construction. Containing the area also helps in keeping dust and particulates away from people. It will also help ensure that no unauthorized person can get in the area.

4. Ensure good ventilation and air quality.

It’s important to adjust HVAC settings to ensure that dust and particulates will not be circulated inside the restaurant. Good ventilation is also a must, especially when a paint job, or other tasks that require the use of certain chemicals, is currently ongoing.

5. Have the contractor perform the construction after-hours.

If it’s possible, ask your contractor if they can perform the work after business hours to make sure that there will be little to no disruption. This can be considered a win-win: customers won’t be bothered by the noise and dust, while the contractors can move and work without worrying about bothering customers. Even though having contractors work after-hours may require additional labor charges, it’s a small price to pay.

6. Secure required permits.

You might need to secure a special permit that will allow you to continue doing business while a renovation project is ongoing at your restaurant. There are also different building permits to secure depending on the specific job being done, so make sure you get them ahead of time. Ask your contractor about the permits that may be required and see if they can secure them for you as part of the contract.
